PRODUCT CONCEPT / THERMAL SCREENING
No-touch cattle thermal screening
A proposed, animal-linked workflow for screening eye-region surface temperature and directing unusual observations to veterinary review.
Supplied HerdSentryAfrica concept or educational material. Select the image to view full size.
What the concept does
The supplied design links RFID animal identification with thermal and RGB camera observations in a shaded, dry screening zone. Image quality is reviewed before a result is linked to the animal record.
The screening workflow
- Shade: bring the animal into a shaded, dry screening area.
- Identify: link the observation to the animal using RFID.
- Screen: capture the eye region and check image quality.
- Flag: record a valid scan, rescan a poor view, or refer an anomaly for veterinary assessment.
Three outcomes
- Valid scan: record the result; proceed according to the herd management plan.
- Poor view or wet eye: rescan where possible, or arrange a manual veterinary check.
- Thermal anomaly: flag for veterinary assessment before spraying.
What screening cannot establish
The concept measures surface temperature, not core body temperature. Shade, exercise, moisture, view quality and calibration affect readings. Screening cannot confirm fever or diagnose a disease. The concept requires field validation against veterinary reference temperatures.
Infrastructure shown
The supplied station concept includes a shaded canopy, solar power and battery backup, RFID identification, dual thermal and RGB cameras, a calibrated reference target, and proposed edge processing and farmer alerts.
